Windows XP - Show Run Command Option


Welcome to this Windows XP tutorial on how to show or hide the run command option for the start menu. The run command feature is a very handy tool and should probably be left on the start menu. You can take it off if you wish though.

From the windows xp desktop you will see a horizontal blue bar running along the bottom of the screen, this is the taskbar.

To change some of the taskbar properties, right click the blue taskbar and a small menu you appear as pictured. Click the 'Properties' option.

The Taskbar properties window will load up and present you with some settings.

At the very top of the window you will see two tabs labelled 'Taskbar' and 'Start Menu'.

Click the 'Start menu' tab.

You will see the Start menu options which allow the menu to be displayed as the Windows XP default menu or the older style Windows 98 Classic Start Menu.

Next to the Start menu option you will see a 'Customize' button. Click this button which will launch the Start Menu settings.

Once the window loads, click the 'Advanced' tab along the top.

In the middle of the customize start menu window is a list of options with checkboxes next to them.

Clicking the up and down arrows allows the settings to be scrolled up or down. Scroll the settings until you see the 'Run Command' option as pictured in our example.

If the checkbox is not ticked then the Run Command option will not be displayed on the Start menu.

If the checkbox is ticked then the Run Command option will show on the start menu.

You can see on our example what the Run Command option looks like when ticked to be shown.

To exit the start menu settings click the 'Ok' button. To exit the taskbar settings click the 'Ok' button again.
