Windows XP - Run Disk Cleanup

Welcome to this Windows XP tutorial on how to run a disk cleanup. A disk clean up is normally run when you are running low on space or your system is sluggish (the computer system not yours)

Windows XP - Run Disk Cleanup

With Windows XP loaded to the desktop you should see the desktop icons.

With the mouse double click the My Computer icon.

You will see a list of all the drives that are available under My Computer.

You can defrag any drive although it is usually the C:\ drive that requires attention more as this drive is the one that is constantly being used.

With your mouse right click on the 'c:\' and from the menu that appears left click the 'Properties' option at the bottom.

You will see the properties window of 'c:'.

You will see a pie chart showing how much used space there is and how much free space is available.

Next to the pie chart you will see a button labelled 'Disk Cleanup'. Click the Disk Cleanup button

The disk cleanup utility will run and checks the computer for all unneccessary files that could be removed.

Once the disk cleanup utilty has finished you are presented with a list of items that can be removed to create more hard drive space.

To remove some of the items tick a checkbox next to the files you wish to delete.

You will see how large the files are in the numbers to the right of the item description.

Once you have selected the items to be cleaned up click the 'Ok' button.

The utility will start the process of deleting the files and will return you to the C: drive properties box when done.
