Windows XP - Add / Remove Programs


Welcome to this Windows XP tutorial on how to add or remove programs. You may want to uninstall programs you no longer use or create some space on your hard drive.

Windows XP - Add / Remove Programs

With your computer logged into Windows you should have the desktop loaded. In the lower left corner of the screen click the 'Start' button. A vertical menu will pop up.

On the right of the pop up start menu are many commonly used items. As pictured 'Control Panel' is one of these items.

Click the 'Control Panel' option on the start menu.

The control panel will load showing all of the available settings. You will see an icon for 'Add or Remove Programs' which we have highlighted in the picture.

With your mouse, double click the 'Add or Remove Programs' icon.

The Add or Remove Programs properties window will appear.

Once the add remove program window has finished loading you will see all the currently installed programs like the example.

Along the top you have the option to 'Show Update' which if you tick the checkbox will list all the Microsoft updates as well as programs.

By default the list is sorted in alphabetical order

If you want to uninstall or remove a program click the scroll bar up or down arrows to move the list up or down.

Once you find the program you wish to uninstall click the name with the mouse so it becomes highlighted like in our example.

You will see two buttons appear within the highlighted selection labelled Change and Remove.

Click the 'Remove' button.

You will recieve a prompt asking you if you are sure that you wish to remove the program.

Click the 'Yes button.

The uninstall utility will start and the program will be removed from the computer.

Uninstalling a program will delete the files that the program used and remove start up entries and registry entries too.

When the program is uninstalled you may recieve a notification telling you it has finished or sometimes you don't, it will depend on the program.

You can see now that when you look at our example, the 'Ask Toolbar' has gone from our list of programs.

You should always use the add remove utilty to remove unwanted programs from your computer as just deleting files can cause problems to Windows.

To exit from the Add Remove utilty click the red square with the white x in the top right hand corner.
