Windows XP - Delete a user


Welcome to this Windows XP tutorial for deleting a user. You may want to delete a user if that person no longer uses the computer.

Windows XP - Delete a user


Start Menu button displays the recently used programs and the start menu which shows available programs. Access to the control panel can be made from here.

With the Windows XP screen loaded to the desktop you will see a blue bar along the bottom and a blank screen usually blue which is the desktop and normally has a recycle bin icon on it.

From the lower left side of the screen click the Start Menu button which will pop up and produce a vertical menu as pictured left.

At the top of the screen you will see a small picture with a name next to it. With your mouse click this small picture.

You will see the user account dialog box appear. At the top of this box you will see two buttons labelled 'Back' and 'Home'.

The box should look like the picture on the right.

Click on the button labelled 'Home'.

You will see the box as on the left which shows a list of options and the existing users which in this case are 'User', 'Guest' and 'Example' as created in the previous tutorial.

From the menu under 'Pick a Task' click the option 'Change an Account'.

This will launch the next window

You will see the heading for 'Pick an account to change'.

Click on the user you wish to delete.

You will see a list of available options for the user that you selected.

At the bottom of the list is 'Delete the account'. Click the 'Delete the account' option.

You will be prompted as to whether you wish to 'Keep Files' or 'Delete Files'.

If this user has been on a while then there is a good chance that person may have created documents. This is asking if you wish these to be saved.

Our user has only just been created so no files exist. We will click 'Delete Files'

The next box will prompt you a second time to check that you do actually want to delete the user!

If you are sure you want to delete then click the 'Yes' button.

Once you click delete, Windows XP will remove all the applicable files or move them to your desktop depending on whether you selected 'Keep' or 'Delete' above.

You will be brought back to the main user accounts screen that we saw before.

You can see that the deleted user is gone and only the other two existing accounts are there.

In the top right click the red box with the white X in it. This closes the user accounts box
